Colon Cleansing – The History of Colonic Hydrotherapy

Posted by admin in June 4th 2010

About one hundred years ago, the first modern colon irrigation machine came into operation. This was during the boom days of enemas, and it provided a much easier way to get the job done than by the gravity flow enema people used at home. It was the first easy way to do a colon cleansing.

Colonic hydrotherapy dates back much further than you might imagine as accounts are documented around 1500 B.C. Hippocrates used enemas for fever as long ago as the 5th century B.C. Galen advanced the use of enemas in the 2nd century A.D., and Pare established the difference between colonic irrigation and enemas.

Dr. John Kellogg used colon therapy on forty thousand patients in the early 1900’s. He reported that all his gastrointestinal patients were treated without surgery with the exception of 20 cases. That’s quite a lot of patients for something some people don’t think is important today.

In the 20th century, colon irrigation was used often on numerous patients. It was the standard treatment for and deterrent against many illnesses. Then, shortly after these machines became commonplace, laxatives were invented.

Many physicians decided it was more economical for their patients to self administer the pill rather than come to their offices. This marked the decline of colonic hydrotherapy, and it fell into the background as more patients and doctors turned to manufactured medicine.

Today, colonic hygienists or therapists perform colon irrigations with equipment designed to move more water rapidly and alleviate much of the discomfort and odors attributed to the old ways. The machines are no longer in doctor’s offices, but are in specialty treatment clinics.

Is it worth the expense and time to have colon irrigation? This you should answer for yourself. There are many easy ways to do a colon cleansing at home, without the expense and the bother associated with the irrigation procedure.

Colon Cleansing and Detoxification for Improved Liver and Kidney Efficiency

Posted by admin in June 1st 2010

Many exponents of diet plans believe in cleansing or detoxifying the body due to the toxins left behind by the bad foods that have been consumed. All natural diets exemplify the deep-seated belief that processed and unhealthy foods need to be completely purged from our systems.

There is little doubt that some things we consume have toxins in them. Drugs are often toxic, especially illegal and unregulated kinds. Alcohol passes through the system, but it leaves its trail and residuals after it’s gone. These leftovers, just like many drugs, come out through the pores of the skin in perspiration.

Some part of everything the body consumes passes into the colon in some amount. That is why colon cleansing is considered important from a detoxification standpoint. There are those who believe that the body cannot completely rid itself of all the bad elements that it takes in.

Along with detoxification, natural diets adhere to a heavy consumption of water. This is in line with the waste that leaves the body through the sweat glands. Water acts as a natural cleansing agent to transport toxins in body fluid to the surface and out of the body.

If you know something of the workings of the body, you understand that the liver and the kidneys are in charge of removing toxins from the body. Some might argue that if they are doing their job, there is no reason for detoxification.

Of course, in a perfect situation, there would be very few toxins in the body at any particular time, but detoxification is not represented to repel all toxins. It is merely to help the body expedite the task.

Overworked livers and kidneys have been known to fail. Perhaps colon cleansing can provide assistance to keep them working efficiently.

Colon Cleansing – How Safe Is It?

Posted by admin in May 26th 2010

Because of the varied and controversial nature of the subject, you may wonder if you should consider colon cleansing. Perhaps you have a friend who swears that it is good for your system, makes him or her feel better, and is a necessary process of life.

If you have spoken to your doctor about this, there is a good possibility that you did not get a resounding answer in either direction. Most American doctorial teachings of the day do not expound this as a needed procedure. Some doctors consider the occasional practice to be of some benefit.

A common observation is that the body naturally cleans itself on a regular basis and therefore, any other cleaning is unnecessary. However, if a doctor is to perform a colonoscopy, he or she will call for the colon to be cleaned of old feces that can be attached to the lining.

How safe are the various ways to cleanse the colon? According to medical journals, enemas are the most dangerous. Although there are not epidemical numbers to associate with harmful side effects, some problems have occurred due to an improper insertion of the tube causing gastrointestinal perforation, and there have been cases of amoebic infection because equipment wasn’t properly sterilized.

Excessive use of enemas has been related to cardiac problems of failure and attack. This is because of electrolyte imbalances. Some doctors feel that using any kind of colon cleansing regularly can lead to dependency and the inability to defecate without assistance.

Does any of this prove that colon cleansing is bad for you? No, it does show that you should be aware of the best kinds of cleansers to use, and take it seriously when you perform such a process. Ask questions before you do anything that might be detrimental to your body or if you are unsure of its risks.
